Energetics of single active diffusion trajectories

چکیده
The fundamental insight into Brownian motion by Einstein is that all substances exhibit continual fluctuations due to thermal agitation balancing with the frictional resistance. However, even at thermal equilibrium, biological activity can give rise to non-equilibrium fluctuations that cause “active diffusion” in living cells. Because of the non-stationary and non-equilibrium nature of such fluctuations, mean square displacement analysis, relevant only to a steady-state ensemble, may not be the most suitable choice as it depends on the choice of the ensemble; hence, a new analytical method for describing active diffusion is desired. Here we discuss the stochastic energetics of a thermally fluctuating single active diffusion trajectory driven by non-thermal random forces. Heat dissipation, usually difficult to measure, can be estimated from the active diffusion trajectory; guidelines on the analysis such as criteria for the time resolution and driving force intensity are shown by a statistical test. This leads to the concept of an “instantaneous diffusion coefficient” connected to heat dissipation that may be used to analyse the activity and molecular transport mechanisms of living systems. open access Copyright c © EPLA, 2014 Published by the EPLA under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License (CC BY). متن کاملClassification and Segmentation of Nanoparticle Diffusion Trajectories in Cellular Micro Environments
Darkfield and confocal laser scanning microscopy both allow for a simultaneous observation of live cells and single nanoparticles. Accordingly, a characterization of nanoparticle uptake and intracellular mobility appears possible within living cells. Single particle tracking allows to measure the size of a diffusing particle close to a cell. However, within the more complex system of a cell's c...

Diffusion processes of atoms, molecules, and clusters on solid surfaces continue to be subjects of active research of basic and technological interest (e.g., in the areas of film growth and catalysis), and a source of discovery pertaining to diffusional energetics and mechanisms [1]. In particular, enhanced diffusion rates of adsorbed small metal clusters containing up to ,10 atoms have been ob...
متن کاملA Gravitational Search Algorithm-Based Single-Center of Mass Flocking Control for Tracking Single and Multiple Dynamic Targets for Parabolic Trajectories in Mobile Sensor Networks
Developing optimal flocking control procedure is an essential problem in mobile sensor networks (MSNs). Furthermore, finding the parameters such that the sensors can reach to the target in an appropriate time is an important issue. This paper offers an optimization approach based on metaheuristic methods for flocking control in MSNs to follow a target. We develop a non-differentiable optimizati...
متن کاملAccurately determining single molecule trajectories of molecular motion on surfaces.
This paper presents a method for simultaneously determining multiple trajectories of single molecules from sequential fluorescence images in the presence of photoblinking. The tracking algorithm is computationally nondemanding and does not assume a model for molecular motion, which allows one to determine correct trajectories even when a distribution of movement speeds is present. We applied th...
